Sometimes the most memorable wildlife encounters are the ones you never planned on finding.
We stumbled across a Great Horned Owl nest tucked away in the forest, and before long, we started noticing young owlets perched in different trees throughout the area.
They were surprisingly spread out, each one sitting quietly among the branches.
Then we heard the adult owl call.
Almost immediately, everything changed.
The young owls began hopping and flying from tree to tree, making their way toward the adult. One after another, they gathered together.
And then we realized why.
The adult had returned with a rabbit.
Feeding time.
Watching the owlets respond to the parent’s call was incredible. One moment they were scattered throughout the forest, and the next they were gathered together, wide eyed and waiting for their meal.
For a brief moment, an adult Great Horned Owl and one of the young owlets sat together with the rabbit.
It was such a simple glimpse into their everyday life, but being there to witness it felt anything but ordinary.
We had not gone into the forest expecting to find an owl family that day.
Sometimes you simply end up in the right place at the right time.
And those are often the wildlife moments you remember the most.
